RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa to summon Corps Commanders Conference today.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has summoned a Corps Commanders Conference today in light to India’s move to annex occupied Kashmir. Pakistan’s response to any misadventure by India will be discussed in the meeting. The decision was made after India illegally ended occupied Kashmir’s special status by revoking Article 35A and Article 370 on Monday.
On Monday, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi signed a bill to remove Article 370 from the Indian constitution. The amendment terminates the special status given to Kashmir. Prior to the amendment, residents of occupied Kashmir, lived under a separate set of laws- concerning citizenship, ownership of property, and fundamental rights- as compared to Indian citizens elsewhere in the country.
Indian Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said in the Rajya Sabha that entire Kashmir is under curfew with Section 144 imposed in several districts. It’s a war-like situation with mobile phones and internet services shutdown and several Kashmiri leaders under house arrest. The Indian authorities have banned public movement and closed all educational institutions in Kashmir.
The crackdown imposed on late Sunday night has left millions stranded in their homes as authorities also suspended internet services and deployed an additional 28,000 troops around the increasingly tense region.
On Sunday, United Nations urged India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint amid escalating tensions along the LoC in the disputed Kashmir region.
