DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A senior Awami National Party leader and Dera Ismail Khan mayorship candidate has been shot dead outside his home.
Unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle targeted Umar Khatab Shirani outside his residence in the Model Town area. He was the candidate for DI Khan city mayorship in the local body elections, the first phase of which will be held tomorrow, while the mayoral election in Dera Ismail Khan is likely to be postponed after the incident.
Police arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area in search of the attackers. It may be recalled that a day earlier, police and agencies had conducted an intelligence-led operation against terrorists in the Kulachi area of Dera Ismail Khan.
The most wanted terrorist commander Tahir Zaman alias Basit was killed during the operation. Security forces also recovered a grenade and weapons from his possession.
