TEHRAN: Tehran has launched a major relief initiative aimed at easing the impact of inflation on residents, with the city administration announcing a six-month price freeze on 12 essential food items.
Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani outlined the details of the welfare programme at a press conference, saying residents would be able to purchase basic daily-use items at fixed prices with government subsidies.
The programme also introduces a monthly quota for each resident to ensure that subsidised goods are distributed fairly among households according to their needs.
Under the scheme, each person will be entitled to purchase 2 kilograms of rice per month at subsidised prices. Consumers will be able to choose from three varieties of rice according to their preference.
A monthly quota of 400 grams of cooking oil per person has also been included in the programme.
Subsidised Items to Increase From 12 to 15
The Tehran mayor also announced that the subsidy programme will be expanded from October, with the number of subsidised food items increasing from 12 to 15.
Starting next month, chicken, tomato paste and cheese will also be added to the list of subsidised products.
More Affordable Markets Across Tehran
The municipal administration has also decided to expand the network of markets selling fruits and vegetables at affordable prices.
Under the plan, the number of such centres across Tehran will be increased from 108 to more than 200, with the aim of making essential food items more accessible to residents and easing the financial burden caused by rising prices.
