ISLAMABAD: Pakistan continues to witness a surge in coronavirus cases on Friday, as the number of active cases in the country nears 80,000 and the positivity ratio remains above eight percent.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 4,745 cases and 67 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,058,405 while the death toll stands at 23,702.
The positivity ratio was recorded at 8.18%. There were 57,981 tests conducted in the previous day leading to new cases. In a more worrying situation, the number of active cases in the country has increased to 77,779.
There are 4,157 people who remain in critical condition including 702 new patients in the previous day. Overall 954,711 have recovered from the virus, including 2,095 in the past day.
Sindh has recorded the highest number of cases and remains the worst affected region. The province has recorded 394,748 cases and 6,126 deaths while the number of active cases has reached 48,251.
Punjab has recorded 361,485 cases and 11,141 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has reached 15,718. Islamabad has recorded 89,569 cases and 809 deaths while there are 4,617 active cases in the federal capital.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded 147,026 cases and 4,507 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 30,967 cases and 330 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 8,551 cases and 150 deaths while Azad Kashmir has recorded 26,086 cases and 639 deaths.
A day earlier, Pakistan reported a positivity ratio of above 9% for the first time in three months. The country last recorded a coronavirus positivity rate of 9.12% on May 10.
Sindh is currently under a lockdown till August 8 to control the number of cases. Punjab a have also imposed a partial lockdown in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad, while many parts of Azad Kashmir are also under a strict lockdown.
