UNICEF says 100 Palestinian children killed daily since Israel resumed Gaza offensive

Since the resumption of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza on March 18, an average of 100 Palestinian children have been killed each day, according to a grim statement by UNICEF.

The surge in casualties follows the collapse of a fragile ceasefire that had briefly offered civilians, particularly children, a momentary sense of safety.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), described Gaza as “no land for children,” reiterating urgent appeals for a permanent and immediate ceasefire. “The truce had given children a fleeting glimpse of normalcy, a chance to play without fear. But with its breakdown, they’ve once again been thrown into a nightmare,” said Lazzarini.

Israeli forces resumed heavy airstrikes and ground assaults, displacing thousands of Palestinians, many of whom have been forced to flee refugee camps on foot. Families can be seen struggling to carry their belongings, while children and the elderly endure long, grueling journeys under the threat of continued violence.

Since Israel’s violation of the ceasefire on March 18, over 1,250 Palestinians have lost their lives in just a matter of days. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the total Palestinian death toll since October 7, 2023, has now reached at least 50,523, with 114,638 more reported injured.

Humanitarian agencies continue to raise alarm over the growing crisis in Gaza, where access to basic necessities remains severely restricted. The international community is facing renewed pressure to intervene and halt the ongoing bloodshed.
