ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has reportedly received a copy of the alleged ‘threatening letter’ sent by the United States for regime change which former prime minister Imran Khan claimed was a plot to oust him from power.
According to sources, Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial received a copy of the ‘threatening letter’ at the Supreme Court. National Assembly Deputy Speaker National Assembly Qasim Suri confirmed that a copy of diplomatic cable to the top judge.
A statement from the National Assembly Secretariat said a “confidential letter (in original) received from the Cabinet Secretary which was submitted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs… is onwards submitted for kind perusal of Hon, Chief Justice of Pakistan.”
Qasim Suri had earlier said the sealed letter sent by the National Assembly clearly stated that if the no-confidence motion is successful then pardon or else Pakistan will face serious consequences has been received by the Chief Justice’s Office
“It has been clearly written in the letter threatening serious consequences, if the no-confidence motion will be failed,” the deputy speaker said. “Imran Khan has been punished for not accepting servitude,” Qasim Suri said.
Newly-elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced an parliamentary probe on the ‘threatening letter’. The prime minister will be briefed on the letter by intelligence chief and law-enforcement agencies.
The prime minister said that a briefing will be given in an in-camera meeting of the Security Committee of the Parliament. However, the PTI had rejected to offer to probe the matter by the new government.
