The Punjab government announced on Saturday that summer vacations for schools across the province will commence from June 1 due to soaring temperatures.
School Education Secretary Khalid Nazir Wattoo stated that the schedule could be revised if the ongoing heatwave intensifies.
“If temperatures increase unusually, holidays could begin a week earlier,” Wattoo said, adding, “This step prioritizes the health of students, teachers, and parents, as intense heat can severely impact educational activities.”
The decision comes amid mounting global concerns over climate change, which continues to disrupt weather patterns worldwide.
Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate-related disasters, with experts warning that rising temperatures are increasingly affecting sectors such as education, health, and the economy.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has also advised schools to ensure proper classroom ventilation, operational fans and cooling systems, and to establish first-aid counters manned by heatwave-trained staff.
