KHARTOUM: At least 60 people have been killed after a gold mine collapsed in Sudan’s West Kordofan state.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Sunday. Local authorities and rescue teams launched an operation soon after being alerted to the collapse. Several miners were reportedly rescued alive, while the bodies of at least 60 victims have so far been recovered.
Officials said the collapse was primarily caused by inadequate safety measures and the deteriorating condition of the mine. Rescue teams are continuing their efforts, while concerns remain that several people could still be trapped beneath the rubble, raising fears that the death toll may increase.
Sudan is one of Africa’s major gold-producing countries and has extensive gold reserves. However, much of the country’s mining activity is carried out using rudimentary and hazardous methods, contributing to frequent accidents of this nature.
The rescue operation remains underway as teams continue searching the site for possible survivors and additional victims.
