Police says 39 dead found in truck were Chinese nationals

LONDON: British police said on Friday that 39 dead found in a container truck near London’s Essex industrial park were Chinese.

According to sources, the bodies were discovered from a refrigerated container which was parked in the industrial area of east London.

Essex police revealed in a statement that,”All are believed to be Chinese nationals.”

Police statement further added deceased includes eight women and 31 men.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Boris Johnson referred to the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy” adding that the police are carrying out a massive murder investigation.

On the other hand, Chinese authorities had received the details of this unfortunate murder case and were in contact with the police department regarding the clarification and confirmation.

Earlier, the initial reports added that the U.K police had arrested a truck driver and initiated the probe.

The truck belongs to Bulgaria that entered the UK using Welsh port over the weekend.

Chief Superintendent, Andrew Mariner said, “We are in the process of identifying the victims, however I anticipate that this could be a lengthy process” adding “We have arrested the lorry driver in connection with the incident who remains in police custody as our inquiries continue.”
