Work has officially begun on the “Maryam Nawaz’s Sohna Punjab” development projects across 51 cities of Punjab, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz assuming direct monitoring of their implementation.
The chief minister has directed that the first phase of the Sohna Punjab initiative be completed by June 2026. She has also ordered the swift completion of essential infrastructure projects in every city, including sewerage and other basic civic facilities.
To ensure effective implementation of the Punjab Development Plan, provincial and district-level control rooms will be established.
Maryam Nawaz has instructed that progress on development schemes and the resolution of public issues be monitored personally. She has taken direct charge of overseeing the Punjab Development Plan.
Gujranwala has received the largest development package in its history under the initiative, with a historic allocation of Rs 42.62 billion aimed at delivering development at street and neighbourhood level.
As part of the plan, 131 kilometres of sewerage lines and two kilometres of drainage lines will be laid in the city, while a wastewater treatment plant and 16 machinery units will also be provided.
A special meeting chaired by the chief minister reviewed the progress of the Punjab Development Plan, during which she emphasised transparency and timely completion of every project. Deputy commissioners from Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bhakkar, Vehari, Wazirabad, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura and Kasur briefed the meeting on ongoing developments.
Officials informed the meeting that across the 51 cities, a total of 5,887 kilometres of sewerage lines and 181 drainage lines will be constructed.
To improve mobility, 100 kilometres of roads and streets will be paved under the Sohna Punjab programme in every locality.
The briefing further revealed that more than 33,000 new manhole covers will be installed across Punjab, while the production of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes for sewerage systems is progressing rapidly.
