COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the country has gone bankrupt and next year we will face financial difficulties.
According to international media, the Sri Lankan prime minister admitted in his address to the parliament that the country has gone bankrupt and will continue to face difficulties next year. “Due to the state of bankruptcy our country is in, we have to submit a plan on our debt sustainability to (the IMF) separately,” he said.

The Sri Lankan prime minister said that as a bankrupt country, we have to come up with a concrete plan to repay the loans to the IMF, on which if the IMF is satisfied, an agreement can be expected by August, he added.
“This will be a difficult and bitter journey,” Wickremesinghe said. “But we can get relief at the end of this journey. Progress can be made.” The British government said on Tuesday it is now advising against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka due to the impact of the economic crisis.
