Swara Bhasker, known for her roles in films like Tanu Weds Manu and Veere Di Wedding, has often been in the limelight for her outspoken political views.
From participating in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to surprising everyone by marrying Samajwadi Party leader Fahad Ahmad in 2023, Bhasker’s personal and professional choices have been a topic of debate. Recently, she stirred fresh controversy after a video of her addressing an election rally for her husband went viral, following a meeting with a cleric accused of making statements against women’s education.
Bhasker’s interfaith marriage to Fahad Ahmad, a Muslim leader, drew sharp criticism from certain sections of society, with some questioning her decision as a Hindu. Since then, the actress has been vocal in defending her choices and countering her critics. The latest video shows her passionately addressing her husband’s opponents during his campaign for the Anushakti Nagar Assembly seat, where he is contesting as an NCP (SP) candidate.
In her speech, Swara Bhasker spoke about religious harmony and questioned those targeting her husband’s faith. Without naming anyone, she said, “Respect for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) doesn’t depend on one’s birth or caste. I want to ask those questioning my husband’s religion: where was your faith when your friend Anil Rathore hosted a meeting where someone insulted your Prophet?” Her statement was seen as a sharp retort to her husband’s detractors.
Bhasker further targeted BJP leaders, asking why their faith was silent when Bilkis Bano’s rapists were honored. She said, “When BJP leaders garlanded the rapists of Bilkis Bano, where was your faith?” The video, which quickly went viral, has reignited debates on interfaith marriages, religious identity, and the role of Bollywood celebrities in politics. The name of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is mentioned by her after 1:15 in the video.
Since her marriage to Fahad Ahmad, Bhasker has largely stepped away from acting, focusing on her personal life and activism. The couple welcomed their daughter, Rabia, on September 23, 2023. While Bhasker’s absence from the screen is noticeable, her strong political stances continue to make headlines.
