The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has imposed a Rs150 million fine on Mezan Beverages (Private) Limited after finding that its “Storm” energy drink closely imitated the packaging and trade dress of PepsiCo’s Sting, constituting deceptive marketing in violation of Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010.
According to the CCP, Mezan Beverages’ product copied Sting’s overall look, feel, colour scheme, bottle design, and branding elements, creating a high likelihood of consumer confusion at the point of sale.
The commission described the act as an attempt to unfairly capitalize on Sting’s established brand recognition.
Industry observers note that this case highlights ongoing issues of brand imitation in Pakistan’s competitive beverage market, underscoring the CCP’s role in protecting consumers and original brand owners from misleading marketing practices.
PepsiCo’s Sting has long been a leading energy drink in Pakistan, and the ruling is seen as a clear message to companies attempting to mimic successful products.
