Lawyer and MNA Sher Afzal Marwat garnered widespread acclaim this week after publicly rejecting familial pressure to take on a second wife solely to fulfill the desire for a son. His principled stand earned accolades on social media, with actor Sonya Hussyn joining the chorus of praise.
“In this cruel society we live in, I have immense respect for this man,” expressed the Saraab actor on her Instagram reel. “He understands the importance of human decency and the basic principles of relationships.”
Marwat’s stance emerged during an interview on Nadir Hussain’s podcast, where he disclosed his family’s insistence on him marrying again to ensure a male heir. However, Marwat adamantly refused, citing his unwillingness to subject his wife to the emotional turmoil of polygamy. “I couldn’t bring another woman into our lives just to have a child,” he emphasized. “Like everyone else, a woman has just one life. She has basically burned everything in her life just to start a new life with you.”
Reflecting on Marwat’s stance, Hussyn decried society’s persistent pressure for male progeny. “Marrying solely to have a son is incredibly cruel,” she asserted. Nevertheless, she commended Marwat’s loyalty to his wife and underscored how his unwavering commitment and family values would shield his daughters from future distress. “By making this choice, he not only did justice to his wife but also protected his daughters from a lifetime of trauma,” she wrote. “I have no doubt that his daughters will make him incredibly proud one day.” Hussyn concluded her tribute with the words, “Respect, sir.”
