The Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly has approved a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq through an open vote, subsequently electing Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore as the new Leader of the House. He is expected to take oath of office tomorrow.
Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore is the son of Raja Mumtaz Hussain Rathore, who himself served as a former Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir. His mother, Begum Farhat Rathore, was also a prominent political figure and served as President of the PPP Women’s Wing in Azad Kashmir.
The Rathore family is considered one of the founding and leading political families of the Pakistan Peoples Party in Azad Kashmir. The newly elected Prime Minister, Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, was born on April 11, 1978, in Rawalpindi.
He received his early education in Rawalpindi and later graduated from the University of the Punjab. He has held several political positions, including General Secretary of PPP Azad Kashmir.
The PPP leadership had recently nominated Faisal Mumtaz Rathore as its candidate for the office of Prime Minister.
In the past, he has served as a member of the AJK Assembly and has held various ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Electricity.
Even before today’s election for Leader of the House, the PPP leadership confidently asserted that Faisal Mumtaz Rathore had already secured a majority and was well-positioned to form the government.
