Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a message of congratulations to Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
In his message, the Russian president said that at a time when Iran is facing aggression, the responsibilities associated with such a high office will undoubtedly require courage and dedication.
Putin added that he is confident the new leader will continue the work of his father, Ali Khamenei, with dignity and will keep the Iranian nation united during difficult times.
In his statement, President Putin also reaffirmed Russia’s support for Iran, saying that Russia would remain a reliable partner of the country.
“I reiterate my unwavering support for Iran and express solidarity with my Iranian friends. Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.
It is worth noting that 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei has become the third Supreme Leader in Iran’s history. His predecessor Ali Khamenei held the position for 37 years.
According to reports, on 28 February his residence in Tehran was targeted during joint air strikes by the United States and Israel, in which he was killed.
