The Punjab Information and Culture Department has imposed a one-month ban on eight stage actresses over obscene and immoral dance performances and inappropriate gestures.
According to the notification, action was taken against the artists based on monitoring reports of the Punjab Council of the Arts (PUKAR).
Mahi Rajput, Hina Sheikh, Malaika Shahzadi, Madiha Khan, Mehak Noor, Manu Multani, Raima Mehar and Hasna Jatt have been banned from performing in theatres for one month.
The department directed all concerned authorities to strictly implement the ban.
A couple of months ago, the Punjab government, under Maryam Nawaz, had launched an anti-obscenity drive forming a seven-member advisory committee to make commercial theater plays ‘civilized and family-friendly’.
Last year, in an attempt to curtail obscenity in the commercial theatre, the Punjab government had approved amendments to the 150-year-old Dramatic Performances Act 1876, transferring the administrative affairs of the dramatic performances from the home department to the Information and Culture Department.
