ADELAIDE: Tete Yengi, a rising star in Australian football, has officially embraced Islam. After reciting the Kalima (the Islamic declaration of faith) at a mosque, the athlete emphasized that his conversion was not a sudden emotional impulse, but rather the result of a prolonged intellectual, spiritual, and personal journey.
In a statement following his conversion, Yengi revealed that his path to Islam began with a simple act of curiosity.
He recounted visiting a mosque in Adelaide to observe Muslim prayers firsthand and to experience the atmosphere of the worship space. During this visit, Yengi met with the renowned scholar Mufti Ismail Menk.
Following the Friday congregational prayers, the two engaged in a conversation during which Mufti Menk asked Yengi if he had ever recited the Kalima Shahadat. Upon learning that he had not, the Mufti invited him to embrace the faith—an invitation Yengi accepted with joy, reciting the testimony of faith within the mosque.
Reflecting on his transition, Yengi noted that his journey was not sparked by a single event but was cultivated over time through study, reflection, and various life experiences. He stated that he made the decision with complete conviction and peace of mind, noting that he now feels a profound sense of inner tranquility.
Tete Yengi, 25, is regarded as one of Australia’s emerging football talents. Of South Sudanese descent, he has earned acclaim for his physical strength, speed, and aggressive style of play. Having represented several clubs, Yengi has successfully secured a place within the Australian national team.
