The Power Division on Tuesday reported a noticeable improvement in electricity supply across the country since April 17, attributing the progress to increased hydropower generation and better grid stability.

In a statement, the division’s spokesperson said that enhanced water releases from dams, carried out on the request of provinces, have significantly increased hydroelectric output.

As a result, around 5,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity is being generated during night peak hours, helping ease pressure on the system.

The spokesperson further noted that an additional 400MW of surplus electricity available in the southern region has been successfully transmitted to central parts of the country, contributing to overall grid stability and improved supply.

Highlighting recent trends, the Power Division said that no load management was carried out during night peak hours on April 17, 18, and 19.

On April 20, however, most power distribution companies implemented only one hour of load management at night, while Gujranwala Electric Power Company and Sukkur Electric Power Company enforced up to two hours of outages during peak times.

Despite the improvement, the spokesperson pointed out that LNG-based power plants with a total capacity of 5,500MW are currently not generating electricity due to the unavailability of liquefied natural gas. These plants are expected to resume operations once LNG supplies are restored.
