KARACHI: Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Laboratory (SFDL), University of Karachi will arrange training workshops for Sindh police to analysis crime scene, forensic samples collection, transportation, submission, interpretation, and understanding of reports.
The workshops would arrange according to international standards containing qualified and trained staff and highly advanced technology.
In this regard, Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Laboratory (SFDL), University of Karachi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sindh Police to avail the ‘revolving fund facility’ of RS.50 million required for the analysis of forensic samples submitted by the provincial police.
According to the MoU, Sindh Police will use this amount to pay off the charges for the analysis of forensic samples at SFDL.
Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, UoK on behalf of the SFDL and Additional IG Police Ghulam Nabi Memon signed the agreement in a meeting held at Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi
Other officials from Sindh Police and a few officials of the international center, including SFDL In-charge Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed and Industrial Analytical Center In-charge Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, were also present in the meeting.
Based on the MOU, Sindh Police and SFDL will avail the facility of a revolving fund account with an amount of Rs. 50 million released by the finance department of police. Continuing operations without any fiscal year limitation and the account will be replenished by repaying money used from the account.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Iqbal Choudhary, who is also the Coordinator General of COMSTECH, said that SFDL, which was established at the Jamil-ur-Rahman Center for Genome Research and works as a part of the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research is a state-of-the-art world-class forensic DNA laboratory in the country.
“SFDL is the second forensic DNA laboratory in Pakistan and first in Sindh to assist law enforcement agencies of the province in crime scene investigation, and to perform forensic DNA and serology analysis of a wide spectrum of criminal and civil cases”, Prof. Choudhary said.
Additional IG Police Ghulam Nabi Memon underlined the important role of forensic DNA laboratory in connection with assisting law enforcement agencies in crime scene investigation in the modern time and said that forensic science was an important modern age tool for solving criminal cases.
He appreciated the professionalism and working capacity at the SFDL and hoped that this agreement would definitely bring Sindh Police and SFDL close on professional grounds.
