PM announces two months remission in sentences for prisoners

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has announced to reduce sentences of prisoners all over the country by two months on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

During a visit to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore on Sunday, the prime minister also announced to bring perks of jail officers and Staff at par with Police.

Shahbaz Sharif also announced the formation of a Jail Reforms Committee, headed by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah to evolve a comprehensive strategy to facilitate prisoners and overall improve the jail system. The committee will include Chief Secretaries of all provinces, Jail authorities, education prisoners and their relatives.

He also specially directed the authorities of Kot Lakhpat jail to utilize all the available resources in an effective manner to meet the basic requirements of jail inmates. In this regard, the prime minister directed for further improvement in dining and health facilities of prisoners.

He also asked for effective use of skill development resources, so that prisoners could spend time in jail in a positive manner and adequately gear up for playing an effective role in society after completion of their jail terms.

Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister said that it is the government’s responsibility to facilitate prisoners as useful citizens of society after completion of their sentence.

Later, Prime Minister made an unannounced visit to a Ramadan Bazaar in Johar Town area of the city. He directed to ensure provision of daily use items to the public at cheaper rates during the holy month of Ramazan..
