KARACHI: An alleged assault on Arif Saqi, chairman of the University of Karachi’s Department of Shia Islamic Learning, has been reported near Safoora Chowrangi in Karachi, following which he was taken to Sachal Police Station.
According to sources, the incident took place within the jurisdiction of Sachal Police Station, where Saqi was allegedly assaulted by armed guards of influential individuals, leaving him injured.
Police said preliminary information suggested that the incident stemmed from a dispute involving a vehicle collision. According to police, the guards of the son of the owner of Sindh Green Hotel, located near Safoora Chowrangi, have been accused of assaulting Saqi.
Saqi alleged that Haneen, the son of the hotel owner, struck him with the butt of a pistol. He also claimed that aerial firing took place during the incident.
Police have so far neither confirmed nor denied the allegation of aerial firing. Officials said legal proceedings were underway to register a case on Saqi’s complaint.
Following the incident, police launched an investigation into the matter and are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault. The role of the individuals allegedly involved will be determined as the investigation progresses.
Saqi’s statement is also being recorded as part of the legal proceedings. Police said further details would emerge once the case is formally registered and the investigation advances.
