ISLAMABAD: The Times Higher Education (THE) released its World University Rankings 2026 on Thursday, featuring 2,191 universities from 115 countries. Pakistani institutions once again failed to make it to the top 400 list globally.
According to THE, 99 Pakistani universities were included in the rankings this year — 48 received regular ranks, while 51 were placed under “reporter” status (institutions that submitted data but did not meet the criteria for a ranked position).
Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad, secured a place in the 401–500 band, maintaining its status as the country’s leading higher education institution. COMSATS University Islamabad, Air University, NUST, and Bahauddin Zakariya University were ranked in the 601–800 range, while NUST and UMT Lahore appeared in the 1001–1200 bracket.
At the global level, the University of Oxford retained the top spot, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second and Princeton University in third place. The University of Cambridge and Harvard University rounded out the top five.
The remaining top ten include Stanford University (6th), California Institute of Technology (7th), Imperial College London (8th), University of California, Berkeley (9th), and Yale University (10th).
The rankings highlight persistent challenges for Pakistan’s higher education sector in competing with global institutions on research quality, international outlook, and academic reputation.
