LAHORE: Consumers in Lahore are reporting a significant increase in the cost of roti and naan, with many shops ignoring official government price caps.
Despite the city’s prescribed rate of Rs 16 for a roti, buyers claim they are being charged Rs 20 per piece. Beyond the price hike, citizens have expressed frustration over the declining quality and reduced weight of the bread. Similarly, the price of plain naan has reportedly jumped from Rs 20 to Rs 30.
In response to these complaints, Punjab food security officials have maintained that price increases will not be tolerated.
Officials stated that there is no justification for the hikes, asserting that flour remains available in abundance across the city. To combat these irregularities, the department announced that raids will be conducted to ensure that shops adhere to the prescribed weight and quality standards.
However, the Muttahida Naan Roti Association has pushed back against these claims.
Speaking to media, Association President Aftab Gul explained that the rising costs of flour, maida, LPG, and packaging bags have made it impossible to sustain the current official prices. Consequently, Gul has urged the district administration to officially revise the price of plain roti to Rs 25 to reflect the current economic reality.
