WASHINGTON: It took three years, but Netflix has finally announced a release date for Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things season 4 — or rather, release dates.
The creators along with the streaming service announced the date for season 4 and said it will release in two volumes. The first will release on May 27 whereas the second part will release on July 1.
According to an open letter released by Netflix, Season 4 of Stranger Things is so long — nearly twice as long as any previous season — that the release is split into two. Stranger Things put child stars Millie Bobbi Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin on the map.

“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four but — as you’ll see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale,” wrote Matt and Ross Duffer in an open letter for fans.
The brothers further wrote, “With nine scripts, over 800 pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things season 4 was the most challenging season yet the most rewarding one.”
Their open letter also read that “due to unprecedented length” the much-awaited season 4 will be released in two parts. The first will release in the last week of May whereas its second part will arrive on the streaming service five weeks later.
For the show creators, season 4 is “the beginning of the end” yet it is also “bigger than ever”. The letter also hinted at separate stories that are yet to be told within the world of Stranger Things including mysteries, new adventures and new “unexpected” heroes.
The official description of season four reads, “It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time — and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, production has not begun on the fifth and last instalment of the show. It is also reported that the fourth season is the most expensive and over-the-budget season of the show.
Despite the massive delay in its release dates, Stranger Things is among Netflix’s biggest franchise and has bagged many nominations including 31 Emmy nods (winning six) with a line of comic books and mobile games.
