ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a countrywide alert after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast intense monsoon activity in the coming days, warning of heavy rains, windstorms and thunderstorms across multiple districts.
According to official advisories circulated by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are expected to penetrate upper and central regions, likely strengthening over the weekend. A western disturbance is also predicted to approach northern areas early next week, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides and urban inundation.
The PDMA has cautioned that vulnerable districts including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Kohistan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi and Abbottabad may experience scattered heavy falls between July 19 and 23. Authorities have been directed to mobilize rescue teams, keep drainage systems clear, ensure uninterrupted water supply, and maintain adequate stocks of food, fuel and medicines.
Farmers have been advised to harvest and store crops safely, while livestock herders are urged to shelter animals against strong winds and thunderstorms. Travelers and tourists have been asked to avoid unnecessary journeys, particularly in hilly terrain where landslides and road blockages are likely. The public has been reminded to seek sturdy shelter during storms, avoid crossing flooded roads or streams, and cooperate with local administrations during emergencies.
Officials stressed that emergency services personnel and equipment must remain on standby in high‑risk areas, while widespread circulation of alerts in local languages is essential to sensitize communities. The NDMA has reiterated that precautionary measures and timely preparedness are critical to minimizing the impact of the approaching weather systems.
