KARACHI: Nineteen years have passed since the Karsaz tragedy, but the painful memories of the night of October 18, 2007, continue to haunt the families affected by one of the deadliest attacks in Pakistan’s political history. The attack targeted a homecoming procession for former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, turning a citywide celebration into a scene of devastation and mourning.

On October 18, 2007, thousands of supporters gathered in Karachi to welcome Benazir Bhutto as she returned to Pakistan after years in exile. The streets between the airport and Karsaz were crowded with enthusiastic supporters waving party flags and chanting slogans, as hopes for a new chapter in the country’s political landscape ran high.

The massive turnout slowed the procession, which took several hours to make its way from the airport towards Karsaz. However, the atmosphere of celebration was shattered when two explosions struck near the procession in quick succession. Within moments, jubilation gave way to panic, cries for help and widespread grief.

Scenes of Devastation and Desperate Appeals for Help
The explosions left behind scenes of destruction and desperation. Injured people lay waiting for assistance, while others desperately searched for missing family members and loved ones. Ambulance sirens filled the air as rescue workers rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals.
