LAHORE: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore bureau on Wednesday arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Moonis Elahi’s political secretary.
Sohail Asghar Awan has been arrested on charges of receiving kickbacks in government contracts. NAB presented the accused in the court of Accountability Judge Zubair Shahzad Kayani.
The anti-graft watchdog took a stand that the accused is facing allegations of corruption and received kickbacks from government contracts. It maintained that there is sufficient evidence against the suspect.
It added that documents and other things must be recovered from the accused. It urged the court to provide the physical remand of the accused.
The court approved the request and handed over Awan on physical remand till August 16. The court sought the investigation report from the NAB investigator at the next hearing.
In May this year, the Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab arrested PTI leader Moonis Elahi’s close aide Sohail Asghar Awan.
Awan is accused of awarding a contract for the construction and repair of the Nabiha Burj to Chitanwala road in Gujrat to his favourite contractor.
Awan allegedly received Rs5 million bribe for the contract. He is also accused of causing a loss of crores of rupees to the national exchequer by using substandard materials in road construction.
