LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Maryam Nawaz created a new history by becoming the first woman Chief Minister during the stormy session of the Punjab Assembly.
Maryam Nawaz is the first woman to be elected Chief Minister of any province of the country. She secured 220 votes against her rival Rana Aftab who was among those who walked out of the assembly.
Earlier, the Punjab Assembly meeting for the election of the Chief Minister started amid commotion when members of the opposition Sunni Ittehad Council boycotted the proceedings.
As soon as Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan explained the procedure for selecting the Chief Minister, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council stood up and tried to disrupt the proceedings by chanting slogans and even staged a walkout from the House.
Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council objected that the House was incomplete as women’s reserved seats and minority members were yet to be named. Rana Aftab stood up and sought permission from the Speaker to speak on the point of order but he was not allowed. On this, SIC walked out in protest.
Speaker Khan formed a committee to negotiate with the protesters, which returned to the assembly for a while but walked out again. The Speaker then decided to proceed without opposition.
