KARACHI: Sindh’s Transport and Mass Transit Minister Sharjeel Memon announced on Thursday that a commuter shuttle service will soon begin at several locations in Karachi. The minister also stated that a crackdown on the city’s illegal bus and taxi terminals is underway.
He attributed the delay in the city’s Red Line bus rapid transit (BRT) project to negligence during the caretaker government’s tenure. “Karachi will have excellent infrastructure once the Yellow and Red Line BRT projects are completed,” Memon said.
Regarding Chingchi (Qingqi) rickshaws operating under a court stay order, Memon mentioned that an alternative employment scheme is being developed for those involved in the transport sector.
The minister highlighted that Sindh is the only province to have introduced electric vehicle (EV) buses and noted the success of the Pink bus service pilot project.
Memon reported that from January 1st to May 22nd this year, 3,900 traffic challans were issued. Additionally, cylinders were removed from 95 vehicles, and 700 challans were issued for illegal parking.
