Pakistan Muslim League leader and daughter of the three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, is all set to become the first woman Chief Minister in the history of Pakistan.
In Pakistan’s history, Benazir Bhutto was the first female Prime Minister of the country, securing the post twice. However, until now, no woman has held the position of Chief Minister in the country.
Maryam Nawaz will be the first female Chief Minister of Pakistan. Following the PML-N’s decision to appoint Maryam Nawaz as the Chief Minister of Punjab, the PPP has also begun considering Faryal Talpur, Asif Zardari’s sister, for the position of Chief Minister of Sindh. However, the party has yet to make a final decision in this regard.
Maryam Nawaz has entered parliamentary politics for the first time, having contested and won elections for both a national and a provincial seat in Lahore.
On Friday, Maryam quit her National Assembly seat and retained the provincial assembly seat to assume the role of Chief Minister.
The Punjab Assembly session has been summoned for today, where newly elected candidates will take the oath as members of the provincial assembly. On Wednesday, Maryam unveiled a development plan for Punjab while presiding over a parliamentary meeting of her party. She pledged a new era of development in Punjab and vowed to deliver on every front.
It is worth mentioning that PML-N has a majority in the Punjab Assembly and would easily elect Maryam as the Chief Minister.
