KARACHI: Parts of Karachi, including Gadap Town, Katohar, and neighboring areas of Malir district, were jolted by a 2.3 magnitude earthquake on Thursday evening.
The quake’s epicenter was located 38 kilometers northeast of Malir, at a depth of 84 kilometers, as reported by the seismic monitoring center.
The tremors, which occurred at 5:52 pm near Malir district, did not result in any loss of life or property. This marks the second minor earthquake in nearly eight days to affect Karachi’s Malir district, following a 3.2 magnitude earthquake on April 24.
Pakistan, situated on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, frequently experiences natural disasters like earthquakes. The seismic activity is attributed to the Indian plate pushing north into the Eurasian plate, rendering large parts of South Asia seismically active.
These recent earthquakes serve as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and mitigation measures.
