ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the government will make every effort to improve the media industry and solve the problems faced by journalists.
In his message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the prime minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the maximum cooperation of the media industry and the protection of the rights of media workers.
He paid tribute to journalists, media workers, writers, and cameramen and appreciated their fight for truth. He said that male and female journalists who sacrificed their lives during coverage in Gaza were heroes of humanity.
The prime minister said that fighting oppression and seeking the truth is also the message of World Press Freedom Day and also a lesson from history. He said that freedom of journalism and expression is the basis of democracy and the protection of civil rights as well as the voice of rights in society.
The prime minister emphasized the collective role of the media and other stakeholders to create an enabling environment to ensure the smooth functioning of the media. He said that the government strongly believes that freedom of media and expression guarantees democratic stability.
The prime minister said that during his valuable 16-month rule, Pakistan improved by seven points in the World Press Freedom Index.
He recalled that at that time the government had taken other measures to protect the media including legislation, health insurance, payment of billions of rupees to the media, and insurance amounts of crores of rupees to media workers through NIRC.
