AMMAN: Israel is reported to have arrested a Jordanian member of parliament on suspicion of attempting to smuggle weapons and gold into the occupied West Bank, according to Jordan’s Foreign Ministry.
According to Israeli media, Imad al Adwan was arrested at the King Hussein (Allenby) crossing in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War. Media reports suggest that authorities have seized weapons and gold found in his car. Adwan, who is 35 years old, is yet to comment on the allegations.
Imad al Adwan, a member of the Jordanian parliament’s Palestine Committee, was detained by Israeli authorities after crossing the Jordan River border by car on Sunday. Israeli officials are currently interrogating Adwan, while Jordanian authorities are seeking to clarify the details of the case and resolve it as soon as possible.
Sinan al Majali, a Jordanian foreign ministry spokesperson, said in a statement to state media, “The ministry in coordination with the relevant agencies in the kingdom was efforting to get details of the case and resolve it as speedily as possible.” The Israeli foreign ministry declined to comment on reports of the arrest.
Adwan’s arrest has sparked concern in Jordan, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Sinan Majali stating that Amman is “following the case of representative Imad Adwan who has been detained by Israeli authorities.” Majali added that Adwan had been arrested “for interrogation in a case concerning alleged smuggling of quantities of weapons and gold.”
