Pakistan-origin Sadiq Khan, who won as London mayor in 2021, is seeking his third term for the same position at the next set of local elections.
Khan has sought to focus on his successes when on the campaign trail. These include an expansion to existing rail and bus lines, as well as frozen fares for Londoners. Let’s find out more about him:
Who is Sadiq Khan?
Representing ‘Labour’ party, Sadiq Khan has been Mayor of London since 2016 and seeking an unprecedented third term in office.
Khan was born and raised in south London, and is the child of Pakistani immigrants. Before entering politics full-time, he worked as a lawyer specialising in human rights, rising to become a partner before leaving to stand as a politician in 2004.
First elected in 2016, he was re-elected in a postponed contest in 2021. It is to be noted here that no one else has managed to hold onto the top job in London for more than two terms.
Khan’s first campaign was run on pledges to increase home building and freeze rail fares. During this period, he also campaigned heavily for the Remain side of the Brexit debate, including marching in London and advocating a second vote in 2019.
Khan’s manifesto for 2024
For 2024, Khan has promised to unleash the ‘greatest council housebuilding drive in a generation’ if voted back in. He has also highlighted his promises of free school meals, Transport for London far freezes, and cleaner air.
