Amid rising tensions between America and Iran, the United States conducted aerial strikes on Iran for the sixth consecutive night and claimed that the aim of these operations was to further weaken Iranian military capabilities. Iran has accused America of violating international law and creating instability in the region. In overnight strikes, America damaged six bridges and power plants, in addition to some civilian infrastructure. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that it would conduct strikes on infrastructure linked to American bases in the region, meaning more heat and intensity are being added to the war. According to Iranian media, as a result of American strikes in Bandar Abbas and other southern areas, around 35 people were killed, while a cancer hospital had to evacuate more than 200 patients due to its proximity to the attack sites.
In this emerging scenario, a bombshell statement by American Vice President JD Vance is nothing less than eye-opening for the world, in which he clearly stated that it is Israel itself that is sabotaging the peace negotiations with Iran. He added that if he were part of the Israeli cabinet, he would not confront America’s only powerful ally, while this statement is being welcomed by a large section of the US population as the first open, high-level criticism of Israel’s behavior.
According to political commentators, JD Vance’s stance indicates that the debate over the traditional policy regarding Israel is intensifying in America, and the American public, especially the younger generation, is now raising with greater intensity the question of whether national interests or Israeli interests are given higher priority in American foreign policy. In his recent statement, pointing toward Israel, JD Vance also took the position that America-Israel relations should be based on shared interests, like those with other allied countries, rather than on a situation in which one party holds a veto-like influence over American policy.
On the other hand, despite the strikes on Iran, the Trump administration is also trying to advance the negotiation process with Iran. The proposed diplomatic framework includes easing sanctions, supporting Iran’s economic recovery, and ensuring free maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the American government is also indicating that diplomacy, rather than continuous war, can provide a path out of the conflict, while obstacles from Israel’s side to the negotiation process, whether direct or indirect, continue to emerge.
Although JD Vance has rejected the possibility of American ground operations in Iran, the reality is that, for the past week, both countries have been engaged in tit-for-tat strikes against each other, increasing fears of further expansion of the war in the region. American Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said that Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz and that American forces will continue their operations in the region. However, Pete Hegseth’s statement that Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz does not correspond with the situation on the ground.
In the meantime, the possibility of the closure of Bab al-Mandab by the Iran-backed Houthis is under serious consideration. If another trade route in the region is closed, its effects will not remain limited to the Middle East but will also affect the global economy, oil supplies, and countries throughout the region and beyond. The security of Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, is also directly linked to this situation. In the context of Pakistan’s defense pact with Saudi Arabia, any such development can be considered an extremely sensitive matter, in which Pakistan may have no choice but to become involved.
Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that the country is taking defensive measures in response to Iranian missile and drone attacks. According to the ministry, the sounds of powerful explosions heard in various areas were the result of air defense operations to destroy missiles and drones. This development has once again spread panic across the Gulf countries, as some Iranian drones and missiles succeeded in hitting their targets.
In this tense atmosphere, various regional leaders are emphasizing diplomatic efforts, and according to reports, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have also stressed, in their contacts with American President Donald Trump, the need to cool down the Iran war and seek a solution through negotiations.
The current situation warrants that America and Iran return to the negotiating table because continuous military operations can become a serious threat not only to the region but also to the peace and economy of the entire world. If both sides are willing to pursue serious diplomacy, holding negotiations at a neutral venue could prove to be an important step toward reducing tensions. In the current regional environment, no place is considered better than Islamabad for this purpose because Pakistan is the only country that is still acceptable to all parties and has previously succeeded in helping to cool regional conflicts.
