Washington’s Realignment: Pakistan’s Path Forward

Amid the fierce rivalry of global powers and rapidly changing priorities in the international landscape, on the one hand, when Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington, US President Donald Trump himself received him at the airport, a red carpet was laid out, the US Air Force band played tunes, and two B-1 bomber aircraft staged a flypast. In American history, Xi Jinping has become one of those few extraordinary presidents who were personally received by the US president at the airport on a red carpet, and the scenes that followed indicate that the US was forced to regard China as its equal, and the same status appeared to be being accorded this time. On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly was strikingly brief, and during his speech at the General Assembly, representatives of more than 70 countries walked out in protest and anger, while people also took to the streets to protest against the massacre.
Undoubtedly, these two scenes reflect that, on the one hand, due to Israel’s waning standing in the US, the American president probably does not want to be seen publicly standing with Israel before the election, which reflects the changing priorities of global powers. Despite this, after protecting Israeli interests for decades, little goodwill can be expected from the US regarding the Iran war or Gaza or any other global front. Rather, despite the amount of innocent blood that has been shed in Gaza and Iran while international laws have been trampled upon, the war shows no sign of ending soon. Nevertheless, it would be correct to say that after the Chinese president’s visit, some kind of positive development can also be expected on the Iran front.
In fact, Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington was his first state visit to the United States in 11 years. Trump personally receiving the Chinese president at the airport was regarded as a striking departure from American presidential tradition. In 1962, during the presidency of John F. Kennedy, there were examples of foreign heads of state being received at Washington airports, but in recent decades this tradition has no longer remained customary, which continued to indicate that the US remained steeped in superpower hubris and gave no indication of bringing or portraying the head of any nation as its equal. Therefore, the current reception is also being viewed not merely as a formal procedure but as a symbolic bid to recalibrate relations between Washington and Beijing. Among the immediate effects of this visit is also the important fact that during the visit, the two countries agreed to extend the trade truce by another two months and to reduce tariffs on goods worth $30 billion. The purpose of extending the truce is to gain time for further economic negotiations, while several issues between the two countries, including rare minerals, agricultural products, tariffs and technology, are still under discussion.
Artificial intelligence, Taiwan and Iran were also key flashpoints between Washington and Beijing, and the underlying rivalry between the two countries has not ended, but the current strategy prominently features an effort to keep differences under control through communication and negotiations rather than through complete confrontation with each other. At the conclusion of the Chinese president’s visit, the two countries also pledged to move forward toward constructive and strategic stability based on respect, equality and mutual interests.
There has also been notable pushback in American public opinion at this time against complete confrontation with China, when a July 2026 survey by the Chicago Council found that 57 percent of American adults supported a policy of friendly cooperation and engagement with China, while 40 percent preferred a policy of limiting the expansion of China’s power. These figures show that there has been some change in the deep-seated negativity about China within American society in recent years, although China is still considered a chief strategic rival in US policy.
On the other hand, Netanyahu’s recent visit presents a starkly different diplomatic picture. He arrived in New York on September 24 to address the 81st General Assembly and left for Israel only a few hours later. According to US officials, no meeting with Trump was scheduled during the visit. Compared with last year, this was an unusually short stopover, although the fundamental strategic relationship between Israel and the United States remains intact, the main reason for which is Israel’s influence in the US from Congress to the White House and the active presence of the Israeli lobby in every US department, which is an undeniable fact. Therefore, it would not be correct to present this as a weakening of the US-Israel alliance; however, it certainly shows that Netanyahu’s presence is no longer as central as before in current US diplomatic priorities.
It should also be made clear here that at several points, US Vice President JD Vance and, according to leaked reports, various senior figures took aim at the Israeli prime minister’s war plan, saying that before the attack on Iran, he had vowed it would be a short war, but the war is still dragging on even after nearly seven months have passed.
There is a need that, rather than becoming part of one camp in the mutual rivalry of global powers, national interests, economic needs and regional security should take precedence. Therefore, Pakistan wants good relations with all major powers, including the United States, China and Russia, and does not want to become part of any geopolitical confrontation, but at the same time, Pakistan considers China among the key pillars of its foreign policy.
In this context, Xi Jinping’s grand reception in Washington and Netanyahu’s brief presence in New York hold a valuable diplomatic lesson for Pakistan: global politics is now rapidly realigning around new priorities of interests, the economy, regional security and negotiations rather than only permanent alliances. In the current global circumstances, the real measure of power is not merely military superiority but also the ability to conduct diplomacy, maintain economic stability, negotiate and maintain communication with different parties. For Pakistan, the better course is to continue supporting peace, negotiations, regional stability and multilateral cooperation rather than wars and the politics of power, because if rival powers such as the US and China can also adopt the path of negotiations and economic understanding despite serious differences, then in conflicts among neighboring countries, including those in the Middle East, ways should also be paved to give diplomacy a central role instead of force. Although some powers in the world want a strong and nuclear-armed country like Pakistan to somehow get dragged into the war concerning the Middle East and Muslims to fight Muslims so that a major objective of Greater Israel can be achieved without waging war, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also emphasized the same point, saying that Israel and the US also want the Muslim countries of the region to fight among themselves. It is necessary to give diplomacy a central role so that Pakistan and other countries in the region can also advance their economic development, regional peace and national interests more effectively.
