Hosting major international sporting events like the World Cup can bring immense pride, economic benefits, and global attention to a nation. However, for a country like India, the prospect of hosting such events also presents complex security challenges due current domestic situation.
India will hold host the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in October-November.
Pakistan despite security concerns has decided to allow the team to participate in the World Cup on the recommendation of a high-powered committee. “Pakistan has consistently maintained that sports should not be mixed with politics. It has, therefore, decided to send its Cricket Team to India to participate in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023,” the Foreign Office had said.
However, Islamabad has asked New Delhi for security measures to ensure safety of the team.
Meanwhile, India has refused to give any “special treatment” to Pakistan after the latter sought security assurance for the cricket team during its visit to the arch-rival country for the World Cup this year.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India’s official spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, said that there would be no special treatment for the Pakistan team.
“For us, Pak Team is as important as any other team. No special treatment will be given proper cover will be provided when & wherever required,” the official added.
The high-stakes cricket match between Pakistan and India will be played on October 14 at the world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmadabad, Gujarat.
Gujarat is the home state of current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian spokesperson hoped that “it is a good match and not a war”.
Hosting an international event like the World Cup in India presents a unique set of challenges due to historical tensions and security concerns. While the pride and economic benefits of hosting such events are undeniable, ensuring the safety of participants, spectators, and the event itself requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach.
By implementing robust security measures and setting politicis aside, New Delhi should ensure the safety of the national team during its stay in India for World Cup.
