The federal government wants to establish the Federal Constitutional Court on Thursday, immediately after the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment and its signing by the President, as claimed by national media on Wednesday.

According to a report citing sources, debate on the 27th Amendment will resume in the National Assembly today, in which the government is determined to get the amendment passed by the House by evening, so that the way can be paved for the establishment of the Constitutional Court.

The report stated, quoting a senior official, that as soon as the amendment is approved by the National Assembly, the bill will be sent to the President for signature, and after that, the amendment will formally become part of the Constitution.

As soon as the constitutional process is completed, the government intends to hold the oath-taking ceremony of the judges of the Federal Constitutional Court on Thursday, which will formally establish a new court.

The report revealed that the government has completed basic work regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice and other judges of the new court. The initial number of judges in the court will be determined under a presidential order, while any future increase in the number of judges will be decided through an Act of Parliament.

Under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the President will appoint the judges of the Federal Constitutional Court on the advice of the Prime Minister. The Senate of Pakistan has already approved the 27th Constitutional Amendment on Monday, while its approval from the National Assembly today will pave the way for its immediate implementation, and the Federal Constitutional Court will be formally established by Thursday.
