A severe storm and widespread thunderstorms across Pakistan claimed four lives in lightning strikes and injured several others as heavy winds and rain disrupted normal life, officials said on Tuesday.
Two people were killed by lightning in Jhang district, while one person each lost their life to lightning in Kamalia and Toba Tek Singh, and four others were injured when a house roof collapsed during the storm.
According to reports gathered by MM News, strong winds and heavy rainfall caused flooding in low-lying neighbourhoods of Muridke, Sheikhupura, Tandlianwala, Chiniot and Khanewal, as well as surrounding localities. Intermittent rain was reported in Pirmahal, Gujrat and Pindi Bhattian, while Mansehra recorded heavy downpours.
Thunderstorms in Okara and adjacent areas disrupted the local power supply. In Balochistan’s Musakhel district, hailstorms accompanied the rain, raising concerns about likely crop damage.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued forecasts of more rain and thunderstorms over the coming days and urged citizens to take precautionary measures. Authorities have advised people to avoid open fields and tall trees during thunderstorms, secure loose rooftop structures, and take care around flooded roads and vulnerable low-lying areas.
Local emergency services and utility crews have been put on alert to respond to further incidents and to restore affected power infrastructure.
With additional wet weather expected, officials warned of continuing disruptions to transport and utilities in affected districts and repeated appeals for residents to follow safety guidance until conditions improve.
