The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be the biggest edition in the tournament’s history, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. Expanded from 32 to 48 teams, the competition will be staged across 16 cities from June 11 to July 19, featuring a packed schedule of matches and three opening-day ceremonies across North America.

The tournament kicks off on June 11 at 5:30pm GMT at Mexico City’s Banorte Stadium, followed by the first of the opening fixtures.

On June 12, simultaneous opening ceremonies will be held at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and BMO Field in Toronto, marking the official start of matches across the three host nations.

Heading into the competition, Spain, France and England are widely regarded as the primary favorites for the title, with defending champions Argentina and five-time winners Brazil also expected to mount strong challenges.

Spain enter the tournament as the consensus frontrunners after winning the European Championship and building a dynamic squad featuring Pedri, Rodri and teenage star Lamine Yamal. Advanced projections, including data models such as the Opta Supercomputer, also rank Spain among the most likely winners.

France remain one of the most formidable sides, with Kylian Mbappé leading a deep and versatile attacking unit that carried them to the 2022 final. Their blend of youth and experience continues to make them a top contender.

England, under manager Thomas Tuchel, are also among the favourites following consecutive European Championship final appearances and a dominant qualifying campaign. With Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane at the core, expectations are high for a first World Cup triumph in decades.

Other Contenders

Beyond the top contenders, the expanded format opens the door for surprise runs. Portugal, inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, are seen as strong outsiders, while host nations the United States and Mexico will look to leverage home advantage and strong local support in pursuit of deep tournament runs.
