PESHAWAR: Financial irregularities and questionable expenditures exceeding Rs3.58 billion have been uncovered during an audit of various government departments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s tenure, raising serious questions about contract approvals, development project payments and the utilisation of public funds.

According to the audit report, irregularities were identified in the approval process for contracts worth more than Rs1.205 billion, with concerns over transparency and compliance with prescribed procedures.

The report also pointed to excess payments exceeding Rs908.1 million for development and construction projects.

Furthermore, unauthorised expenditures of more than Rs600 million were identified. The audit also highlighted financial losses exceeding Rs378.5 million due to the failure to take action against contractors despite violations of contractual agreements.

During the first phase of the compliance audit for the financial year 2024-25, auditors examined the financial records of 14 administrative departments out of 28 Principal Accounting Officers (PAOs) selected for the audit.

The report further revealed that recoveries amounting to Rs117.009 million were made between January and December 2025. Audit authorities have also confirmed these recoveries.
