KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in a joint operation with Malir police foiled a major terrorist bid intended for Independence Day in Karachi today (Friday).
According to details, the law enforcement agencies arrested two suspects in a joint operation in Jokhio Goth, Gulshan-e-Maymar area. The arrested suspects were identified as Ikram Chandio and Sheeraz Soomro.
A police spokesperson has informed that the arrested accused have confessed during initial interrogation about their involvement in planning terrorist activity in the city on the occasion of August 14.
Malir SPP Irfan Bahadur has said that the “terrorists” belong to an anti-state group based in Sindh. He said that the arrests were based on a tip-off and two grenades were confiscated from the possession of the suspects. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
Two ‘TTP militants’ held with explosive in Karachi
A day earlier, the city police arrested two terrorists affiliated with the proscribed organisation Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who got militancy training in Afghanistan and were planning attacks in the city.
According to details, the arrested suspects recently returned from Afghanistan and had been involved in several terrorism bids before. The raiding police team also recovered over 1kg of explosives and detonators from their possessions.
“The arrested suspects were planning a coordinated set of attacks in Karachi”, a police spokesperson said, adding that they had previously been engaged in many terrorist activities and abductions. They used to launch offensives on NATO consignments as well.
