Veteran actors Faryal Gohar and Jamal Shah have broken their silence on their decades-old divorce, opening up together for the first time about the personal differences and circumstances that led to their separation.
Once regarded as one of Pakistan’s most admired showbiz couples, the two shared candid insights into their marriage, mutual decision to part ways, and the respect they continue to hold for each other despite going their separate paths more than 30 years ago.
Recently, they appeared together on a private TV channel’s program, where they openly discussed the challenges in their married life.
According to Faryal, their issues began in 1987. She explained that Jamal valued his independence greatly and felt restricted by marriage.
Faryal said she never believed that husband and wife own each other; rather, marriage is a bond of friendship. When that friendship no longer remains, living together becomes pointless and meaningless. Therefore, when sustaining the relationship became difficult, they chose to part ways respectfully.

Jamal Shah also acknowledged that he was not suited for marriage, describing himself as naturally carefree and protective of his freedom.
He further mentioned a final factor that strained their relationship. Jamal shared that he had planned to establish an art institute in Islamabad with a woman. Faryal advised him not to get involved in the project, and even the woman’s aunt urged caution, but he proceeded with his decision.
According to Jamal, although the project ultimately did not succeed, tensions between them escalated during that time, leading to a mutual decision to separate.
