LONDON: The iconic black dress worn by the late Princess Diana, famously known around the world as the “Revenge Dress,” is set to go under the hammer again after nearly three decades.
Diana wore the short, off-the-shoulder, figure-hugging black dress at an event in June 1994. That same evening, Prince Charles publicly admitted his infidelity in a televised interview. Diana’s striking and confident appearance attracted worldwide attention, and the media soon dubbed the outfit the “Revenge Dress.”
Designed by renowned designer Christina Stambolian, the dress will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York in December. It is expected to fetch between £110,000 and £220,000. Before the auction, the historic garment will be displayed in London, Hong Kong and Geneva.
The dress was last sold by Diana herself in a charity auction in 1997, where it fetched £39,098. It has remained in the possession of the purchasing family ever since and is now being offered for sale again for the first time since then.
Fashion experts say the significance of the “Revenge Dress” extends far beyond its design. It has become a symbol of confidence, independence and self-expression, representing Diana’s decision to break away from traditional royal fashion and present herself in a bold new way.
Nearly three decades after Diana’s death, her distinctive fashion legacy continues to influence new generations. The “Revenge Dress” remains one of her most recognizable looks and is widely regarded as a defining moment in both fashion and popular culture.
