Lahore: The Punjab government has prepared a plan to launch 1,500 electric buses across 91 tehsils of the province from January 2027 as part of its efforts to modernize public transportation.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the establishment of dedicated depots for electric buses in each tehsil. The government has also set a target of increasing the total number of electric buses to 3,000 by June 2027.
According to the provincial government, 612 electric buses are already operational in different districts, while another 192 buses are expected to begin service soon. The expansion plan covers Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala and several other districts.
The chief minister has directed officials to complete the first phase of the programme by the end of September 2026. Meanwhile, work is also underway on mass transit projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, along with the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus service.
The government says these initiatives will further improve Punjab’s public transport system and provide citizens with affordable, modern and environmentally friendly travel options.
