Emily Blunt opens up about lifelong stuttering struggle: ‘People aren’t asking to be fixed’

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood actor Emily Blunt has opened up about her lifelong battle with stuttering during the promotional campaign for her upcoming film Disclosure Day, revealing how acting helped her find her voice and build the confidence that eventually led her to international fame.

Emily Blunt on Childhood Struggles with Stuttering

Speaking during the promotional campaign, Blunt reflected on the challenges she faced as a child, saying her speech disorder often left her feeling frustrated and unable to express herself.

“I was a smart kid and had a lot to say, but I just couldn’t say it,” the actress recalled, describing how difficult even ordinary conversations could be while growing up.

The Disclosure Day actor said a breakthrough came when one of her teachers encouraged her to join a school play. By stepping into a character and speaking in a different voice, she found that her stutter disappeared whenever she was on stage.

The experience proved life-changing.

Acting Breakthrough and Ongoing Challenges

According to the actress, acting allowed her to separate herself from the anxiety she felt while speaking, giving her a freedom she had never experienced before. She has previously described that moment as a “miracle” that transformed her confidence.

Despite becoming one of Hollywood’s most successful actresses, Blunt admitted that stuttering has never completely disappeared from her life. Stress, exhaustion and major career moments can still affect her speech.

One challenge, she said, remains particularly difficult: saying her own name.

Many people who stutter learn to avoid certain words by replacing them with alternatives, but names offer no such flexibility.

“I still struggle when I have to say my name on the phone,” Blunt said. “You can’t substitute your name, and that’s something many people who stutter continue to deal with.”

Advocacy Through the “Just Listen” Campaign

The actress is currently supporting the “Just Listen” campaign in partnership with the American Institute for Stuttering. The initiative aims to raise awareness about speech disorders and encourage people to be more patient and understanding when communicating with those who stutter.

Blunt said one of the hardest aspects of the condition is the isolation it can create, as many people begin avoiding conversations altogether out of fear or embarrassment.

Through sharing her own story, the actress hopes to help change perceptions and remind people that those who stutter do not need to be fixed — they simply need to be heard.
