The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has declared a sudden surge in electricity prices, announcing an increase of Rs 4.56 per unit, effective immediately.
This modification, attributed to the December fuel adjustment, is slated to be reflected in consumer bills for the upcoming month, contributing to an extra financial burden of Rs40 billion on consumers.
This alteration in tariff marks a continuous upward trend, with electricity prices witnessing an overall increment of Rs8.69 in the past two months. Notably, in November alone, there was an uptick of Rs4.13 in the electricity tariff. This translates to a collective additional burden of Rs76 billion on consumers within this brief two-month period.
The price hike applies to all consumer categories, excluding those served by K-Electric and Lifeline customers.
The rise is attributed to fluctuations in fuel costs incurred during December 2023. The impact on individual bills will vary based on consumption levels and specific tariff categories.
The supplementary cost is expected to compound the financial strain on households and businesses already grappling with rising inflation. Industries reliant on electricity may experience heightened production costs, potentially influencing product prices.
