ISLAMABAD:The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to reject the invitation made by Presidency to discuss dates for holding provincial assembly elections.

The decision was made after meeting summoned by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja morning to discuss and decide poll dates for provincial assembly elections as well as response to President’s letter.

Writing to the Secretary to the President, the ECP Secretary Omar Hamid Khan wrote “in continuation of our earlier two letters, dated 18i° and I9th February. 2023 and facts clearly stated therein. The Hon*ble Commission held a meeting today i.e. 20th February. 2023 at 9:30 AM on the subject matter and decided that the matter being subjudiee. the Commission cannot participate in a meeting on the subject matter with the Office of the President.”
Earlier the other day, the Election Commission in a letter written to the President Secretariat said it may not be able to enter into a process of consultation with the Presidency, as the matter is subjudice at various judicial fora. It said a final decision in this regard will be taken at the meeting today.
The letter had also maintained that the ECP delegation approached the governors of Punjab for appointment of poll date but the governor refrained from providing an election date. The letter concluded that the commission had utmost respect for the President’s office.
