The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has refused to recognize Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP).
A five-member bench of the ECP, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, heard a case concerning PKMAP’s failure to hold intra-party elections, amendments to the party’s constitution, and objections related to its accounts.
During the hearing, PKMAP’s lawyer appeared before the Election Commission. The Chief Election Commissioner asked the lawyer whose signature appeared on the power of attorney submitted to the Commission.
The lawyer replied that the power of attorney had been signed by the party chairman.
In response, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja said that since intra-party elections had not been held, the party currently has no chairman.
The Chief Election Commissioner further said that the power of attorney would be taken on record and an order regarding it would be issued.
The Election Commission adjourned further proceedings in the case until August 19.
